Ruokaa / Food

En ole pitkään aikaan kirjoittanut lempiaiheestani joten asia täytyy korjata! Vaikka tässä on nyt vähän oltua koeperiodiruokavaliolla (mikä sana!), joka sivumennen sanoen koostuu marjapuurosta, bran flakeseista banaanilla, nuudelista tonnikalla ja hedelmistä, niin on jotain kunnollistakin joskus tehty. Pääsiäislomalla tein suklaa-appelsiinijuustokakkua ja karjalanpiirakoita siskon kanssa, ihan itse! Ensi syksyllä otan ruisjauhoja mukaan niin voin täällä leipoa myös.

Sivuhuomautus: Täällä on satanut joka päivä luoja ties kuinka kauan, mutta tietenkin kun minulla on neljä koetta tiistai-lauantai -välillä niin on aurinkoista ja ehkä lämmintä! Niin mun tuuria.

I haven't written about my favourite topic lately at all so I have to make up that one! Even though I've been on an exam diet (bran flakes, berry porridge, tuna & noodles, lots of fruits/berries) I have eaten nice stuff before. There are a couple of things that make me very happy: carelia pies and rye bread. And yes I am very Finnish. I just wonder why I haven't brought more rye bread with me earlier, it stays good for so long, is healthy and has a taste. In autumn I might have to take two packs instead of one, 1.2 kilos...


Also, a sidenote: It has been raining every single day here, but of course, it looks like it's going to be decent or even nice weather Tuesday-Saturday when I have four exams. So my luck.

Niin, sitä lomailtiin tässä kuukausi sitten rapakon toiselle laidalla ja nyt saatte sitten kuvia joita ei ole vähän aikaan näkynyt! Päiväretki Kanadaan Niagaran putouksille oli varmasti yksi matkan mieleenpainuvin asia. Ajankohtakin oli hyvä, sää oli vähän kolea kosteuden takia, mutta aurinko paistoi ja väkeä ei ollut liikaa.

If somebody remembers, I have mentioned I had a holiday across the pond. Here are some photographical proofs about one of the most memorable venues of the holiday. We took a day trip to Canada to see Niagara Falls which were absolutely amazing! The timing was also good, even though it was kind of chilly because of the mist, it was sunny and less crowded.

Morecambe

Manchesterin jälkeen käytiin Morecambessa, pienessä merenrantakaupungissa tässä lähellä. Kaupungissa (tai kylässä) ei itsessään ole juurikaan nähtävää, mutta rantapromenadi on aika kiva, kuten myös näkymä lahden yli Lake Districtin vuorille. Täytyisi ehkä ottaa selvää koska on nousuvesi, olen ollut rannalla vain laskuveden aikaan.

After Manchester went to Morecambe, a seaside town nearby. The town itself doesn't have much to see, but the promenade by Morecambe bay is quite nice. And the view over the bay to the mountains of Lake District. I have only been there when the tide is low, so it would be interesting to see how it looks like with high tide.

Lyhyesti suomeksi. Nyt ei pyyhi hyvin, on vähän koepaniikkia ilmassa viime viikonkin edestä. Koe on luennoitsijan ensimmäinen koe täällä, eli vanhat kokeet eivät auta valmistautumisen suhteen lähes ollenkaan :O apua.


Here I am, queueing for my lecturer's office hour. I have waited now for 40 minutes. Frustrating. And there is no way I could return later as the exam is tomorrow. I just DON'T understand the logic of finance, which  is quite bad thing since it's all about my logic and most of all my major :D Somebody might ask what am I doing here now, I could have come earlier you say, but the most annoying thing is that I THOUGHT I understood the concepts. It was only an illusion and now I'm screwed. I didn't do too well (read very poor) in the mid-term we had in November, so I really need some marks now. Phew. And my memory is incapable to remember all the formulae we need. Of course we are given a formula sheet, but it contains only some formulas. We should know the 'fundamental' ones. The thing I don't get though is why there is variance and covariance? They are like the most fundamental ones for stock return etc valuations so to this point in my studies even a monkey would have learnt those by heart...

Edit: So I went to him, asked some questions, all fine in that sense, but the problem now is that apparently we cover slightly different material this year as the lecturer has changed. Tomorrow's paper will be his first paper so now I'm ever more scared! There is no indication whatsoever how the exam could be like and what topics it would cover... I see problems.

Takaumia / Flashbacks

Sain vihdoin kuvat Manchesterin-lomalta kun kävimme syksyllä sitä kautta siskon kanssa ennen kun rahtasimme muuttokuorman Lancasteriin saakka. Manchester on mielestäni yhä masentava (mutta eri tavalla kuin Edinburgh) ja punatiilisine taloineen huokuu teollista vallankumousta. Lisäksi julkisivulautakunnalle tai asemakaavan määräyksille olisi tekoa, kaupunki on täynnä mielenkiintoista arkkitehtuuria (niin hyvässä kuin pahassa), joka ei pääse oikeuksiinsa ympäristön vuoksi. Kanavat tosin ovat kivoja. Laitan näiden jatkoksi saman reissun kuvia parista muustakin paikasta, joten takaumat jatkuvat lähipäivinä.

I finally got the pics from Manchester when we were there with my sister in September. Better late than never. Nice trip, but definitely not my favourite cities. I like the canal, but otherwise it was kind of depressing (but in a different way than Edinburgh) and for sure a big mismatch of buildings. The abandoned remains of redbrick buildings just scream 'industrial revolution' to me. Maybe it would be better if spent more time there when there would be a possibility to see a bit more. I will also post more pics about that holiday some time soon.

Reipastuin eilen kuitenkin iltaa kohti, muttei ollut ollenkaan juoksuolo. Päätin sen sijaan napata kameran mukaan ja kävellä tavallisen juoksureitin. Kävelin suhteellisen nopeasti, joten olin aika yllättynyt kun huomasin että aikaa oli vierähtänyt yli tunti! Metsäosiosta en saanut enää iltahämärässä mitään järkeviä kuvia kun en osaa säätää asetuksia sopivaksi (koska en jaksa perehtyä.) Muutenkin kuvat näyttävät nyt pimeämmiltä kuin mitä oikeasti oli, mutta ne ovat silti tavallaan aika kivoja.

Venyttelypaikka / stretching stop

I really didn't feel like running last night so instead I grabbed my camera along and decided to take a walk and take the same route I usually run. I walked relatively fast pace, so I was quite surprised that it took me over an hour to walk it while taking some photos too. As it was dusk there was no way could snap a nice forest shot with my non-existing camera setting skills, so I have to get back to those on a sunny day. All the pics make it seem like it was very dark, but it wasn't that much. It looks quite nice though.

Perjantaina oli ensimmäinen koe, sisäistä laskentaa. Pelottavan helpolta tuntui, epäilen että jokin koukku jäi huomaamatta. Muutkin tuntuivat olevan samalla mielellä, mutta siinä tapauksessa vaarana on se, että jos koe tosissaan oli helppo ja kaikki selviytyivät erittäin hyvin, pisteitä saatetaan säätää vähän alemmiksi. Hhhh loputon spekulaatiokaan aiheesta ei auta, täytyy odottaa heinäkuun puoliväliin että tietää mitä sieltä ropsahtaa. Uskallan kuitenkin ehkäpä odottaa korkeaa 2.1 (lähempänä 70 %).

Yleisesti voisin taustaksi vielä sanoa koesysteemistä sanasen, koska se eroaa aika lailla Suomen tenteistä. Kurssin arvosana kostuu courseworkistä (öh kurssityö?) ja kokeesta, aineissa joita opiskelen painotus on yleensä 25 - 75 % tai 30 - 70 %. Eli koe on aika iso juttu. Esimerkiksi tuo sisäisen laskennan kurssi on käyty ennen joulua, jolloin piti kurssityönä oli essee 20 % ja tutorialien tehtävistä ja läsnäolosta saattoi saada max 5 %, ja perjantain paino on näin ollen 75 %. Sinänsä vähän ärsyttävä systeemi kun koko kurssin kattava tentti on vasta 6 kk sen jälkeen kun asiat on opiskeltu, eli vaikka ne olisi silloin osannutkin, väliin on tullut niin paljon muuta että melkein alusta saa aloittaa. Kohdallani systeemi toimii lisäksi vielä vähän huonosti kun en kovinkaan jaksa kurssin aikana panostaa muuhun kuin arvioitaviin asioihin kun tiedän että kaikki täytyy tehdä kuitenkin uudestaan alusta kolmen tai kuuden kuukauden päästä... Ei auta valittaa, näillä mennään.

Mutta kuten otsikosta näkyy, ei tämä leikki tähän lopu, vielä on paljon lystiä jäljellä! Kokonaista seitsemän koetta, ja piina kestää kesäkuun puoliväliin asti. Viikonloppu ei ole ollut ihan yhtä tuottelias kun sen olisi pitänyt olla siihen nähden että kahden viikon sisään on viisi koetta neljästä aineesta... Voin siis yhtä hyvin vähän kirjoitella lisää ja ajastella iloksenne muutaman postauksen ensi viikolle!

I had my first exam on Friday, Management Accounting, great fun. NOT. It felt kind of scaringly easy, I'm afraid I missed the catch of the question. On the other hand, my coursemates felt the same too, so maybe it actually was easy. But then they might adjust marks downwards if everybody did very well. Endless speculation is not going to help though, I have to wait until mid July to find out the result. I kind of expect a high 2.1 (something closer to 70 % than 60 %) but we'll see.


Overall a couple of words about the exam system. A grade of a module consists of coursework (a mix of essays, reports, mid-term, end-of-term) and an exam. For my modules the weighing is usually 25 % -75 % or 30 % - 60 %, respectively, so the exams are quite a defining thing for your grade and the degree itself. Every exam I take this year counts 6.25 % towards my degree result, ie my second year gives me 50 % of my final grade. That is scary. So I still have 7 of 8 exams left and I surely should be doing something else than blogging, especially when my weekend hasn't been too productive considering that I will have five exams of four subjects within next two weeks... I'm going to be a zombie on 4 June when it is the culmination of terror: two exams in a day, which is of course Saturday. Wish me luck.

Kukkia kirkkopihalta / Flowers from church yard

Kuten on ehkä tullut esille, asun katedraalin vieressä. Kävelen sen pihan läpi tai hautausmaan ohi lähes päivittäin, aina kun menen kaupunkiin ja välillä kampukselta kotiin tullessa. "Löysin" pihan keväällä, ja on ollut erittäin mielekästä seurata kevään etenemistä siellä. Ensin tulivat krookukset, sitten narsissit esikot ja orvokit, pääsiäisloman jälkeen muutos on valtava. Puissa on lehdet, kukkapenkit ovat reheviä, pionit, liljat ja osa ruusuista kukkii jo! Juhannusruusut kukkivat Manchesterin lentokentän juna-asemalla tiistaina kun tulin takaisin.

Tänään pitkän kävelylenkin päätteeksi päätin poiketa katsomaan kukkia lähemmin, yleensä kun joudun vain kiiruhtamaan läpi kaupunkia kohti tai palaan rättiväsyneenä kuormajuhtana kaupasta. Osuin paikalle messun jälkeen ja pihalla köpöttelevä setä alkoi jutella (olen kuulkaas aika hyvä jo small talkissa! En mene paniikkiin enää tai ajattele että se on täysin luonnotonta.) Kun tuli puhetta kukista, hän kehotti minua keräämään kimpun kotiin, sillä "kuolevathan ne tästä pian kuitenkin." Olin kohtalaisen häkeltynyt, mutta tein työtä käskettyä ja taitoin matkaan pari keltaista liljaa, jonkun sinisen mistä ei ole mitään käsitystä lajikkeesta ja kukkivia ruohosipuleita.


As I maybe might have mentioned, I live next to a cathedral (the very reason why this village is called city.) I walk through the church yard or pass the cemetery almost daily, whenever I go to town and sometimes when I get home from campus. I 'found' the yard this spring, and it has been very nice to follow how spring comes there. First there were crocuses, then narcisses and violets, and after Easter break the change has been huge. Now peonies, lilies and even some of the roses are in blossom! At Manchester Airport train station midsummer roses were in blossom. 


Today after a long walk I decided to go to see how the flowers are doing. Usually I am just rushing through to town or return very dead. I was there after the service so there were some people unlike usually. An elder gentleman started to talk to me and I wasn't even scared or in panic! I'm getting good at small talk. As we talked about flowers he suggested that I should pick a bunch to take home, because 'these are dying here anyway.' I was slightly confused but happily followed his recommendation by picking some yellow lilies and chives blossoms. 

Ihanaa, Leijonat, Ihanaa!

Jee hyvä peli jota katselin kisastudiosta netin kautta vaihtelevasti suomeksi, ruotsiksi ja viroksi, sen mukaan mikä sattui olemaan yhteydeltään paras. Maamme-laulu jäi kuulematta, mutta ratkaisevat maalit ja lopun tuuletus näkyi ja kuului! Heti loppusummerin jälkeen tuli soitto kotoa :) Hieno peli, hyvä Leijonat, ja isot juhlat tiedossa torilla!

Kisastudion telkkari ja kähinää Ruotsin maalilla

WE DID IT! Finland is the world champion in ice hockey for the second time, first time being in 1995 against Sweden too. Finland-Sweden games always have a lot of tension and i believe many people think winning is nice but winning Swedes is even sweeter! I watched the game online in Finnish, Swedish and Estonian, depending on which worked the best. I missed the end ceremony but saw everything essential. Right after the game ended I got a call from home :) This is incredible and our Lions (that's how the team is called) sure deserve a big party when they get home!

6 viikkoa / 6 weeks

Kuuden viikon loma kolmessa maassa on ohi, olen junassa matkalla Lancasteriin. Tuntuu epätodelliselta palata takaisin toiseen elämään näin pitkän tauon jälkeen. Lisäksi poissaoloaikanani kertynyt pölymäärä kauhistuttaa, sekä se, että tukehtuuko ullakkohuoneeseeni näillä säillä. Nythän täällä on siis tuttuun tapaan pilvistä, hyvin painostavan hiostava ilma ja sateen uhka, viime aikoina on pääsääntöisesti ollut lähempänä kahtakymmentä astetta.

Seuraavat kuusi viikkoa kuluvat lopputenttien parissa, niitä on kahdeksan kuukauden aikana. Laajuus kaikki mitä on tänä vuonna opittu. Kun vihdoin olen valmis 14. kesäkuuta, täytyy pakata elämä kasaan ja miettiä miten hoidan muuton. En tiedä mitä tapahtuu bloggailulle tänä aikana, katsotaan. Yritän jatkaa mutta voi olla stressiahdistuskiire tässä hieman.

Nyt kokoukseen, kertausluennolle, sitten toinen tapaaminen ja koetan sännätä vielä tänään kaupoille ettei jäisi muuta kuin tori huomiselle, täytyy purkaa ja yrittää nähdä kavereita illallisaikaan jos vaikka olisivat tehneet ruokaa!

Eiranranta in Helsinki

My six week holiday in three countries is unfortunately over and I’m heading now back to Lancaster. It feels surreal to return my other life after an extremely long break. In addition I’m terrified by the accumulated dust that is waiting for me, and wondering will my attick room be like a sauna in coming weeks. A dusty sauna, what a combo... At the moment it’s cloudy and grey, very pressuring humid air, probably will rain any time (as usual.) Lately the temperature has been a bit under +20 C here, but of course it gets down when I’m 

arriving.

Next six weeks will be all about exams. I have eight big exams coming, covering everything I have learnt this year. As soon as I finally am ready with exams on 14 June I have to pack up my life quickly and sort out how am I going to handle moving over summer. I’m not yet sure about my blogging activity, I will try to continue but we’ll see how it goes.

Now heading to a meeting, then revision lecture, another meeting, rushing to do food shopping before everything closes, unpack, then visit friends hoping they have cooked something so that I don’t have to. I bet I’m going to be quite dead tonight, last night was kind of short and I had to wake up at six to catch my plane.

205. haaste /challenge

Piti tätä varten haastetta varten ottaa kuva mun viimeaikaisista värikkäistä asusteista, mutta ei siitä mitään tullut. Tässä aiheeseen värit sopiva kuva Glasgown Charing Crossin asemalta. Tykkäsin kovin paikan keltaisuudesta ja rohkeasta värivalinnasta. Edinburghissa Festival Centre oli myöskin hyvin värikäs, piristävää keskellä superharmaata kaupunkia. Edinburgh on ehkä harmain paikka missä olen ikinä ollut, vuodenajasta huolimatta.

Charing Cross, Glasgow

syöksyvä sisko / speeding sister

I was going to take some pics of some colourful accessories I have worn recently but it didn't turn out to be anything good... Luckily my pictures from Scotland go nicely with the theme 'colours.' Charing Cross station in Glasgow was so yellow that it really made my day! I also liked the brave and surprising colour choice. In Edinburgh the Festival Centre (built in an old church) was also very colourful in the middle of super grey city. Edinburgh might be the greyest place I have ever been, no matter which season it is.
