I went to check statistics and it showed quite funny searches that had lead to this blog. All but the last one of them were in Finnish but I will give you translations:

Roskiskujan kingi / The king of the alleys

Viimeisinä viikkoina kuvailin aika laiskasti, vaikka kissat olivat suhteellisen kuvauksellisia. Yksi niistä, aivan Aristokattien Hottikatin näköinen, loikoili usein aidan päällä ja pari muuta riehuivat roskapönttöjen seassa ennen keräyspäivää tai sen aamuna. Meillä on myös paikallinen Thomas O'Malley, joka on pahansisuinen ja tuntee reviirinsä. Se säntäilee autojen alta tai takaa kovasti sähisten jos erehtyy vahingossa kulkemaan liian läheltä.

During the last weeks I was lazy with photographing even though the cats on the streets were quite  entertaining. One that looks like Scat-Cat from Aristocats was often lying on a wall and sometimes a couple others were playing int he middle of wheelie bins and bin bags. We also have a local Thomas O'Malley, who has quite a lot of temper and knows his position as the biggest cat on the streets.

Tänään lähden aikaisin kirjastosta, en varmaan ole enää kuin tunnin. Kaverini järjestää tänään juhlat, joista suuntaamme Dalton Roomsin Ibiza-teemaiseen iltaan. Täällä vallitsee kaikkea muuta kuin välimerelliset olosuhteet: aurinko paistaa kirkkaalta taivaalta mutta on vain +14 ja jäätävä tuuli. Bleiseri ei oikein riitä ilman neuletta :( Käristykää vaan siellä kotona munkin puolesta. Ah en muista koska olen viimeksi ollut kunnolla ulkona. Ehkä Suomessa tai Usassa?

Tonight I'm going to leave earlyish from library and have a free night :) A friend of mine is hosting a party plus there is the last of legendary latin parties in Dalton Rooms. The theme is Ibiza though the weather here is very un-ibiza-like, it maybe could be nice otherwise but it's only +14 and crazy wind...  So no Ibiza clothes for me. Can't remember last time when I have been properly out. Maybe in US or Finland?

Vähiin käy ennen kuin loppuu / Soon it's over

Havahduin äsken siihen että viikon päästä on lähtö lähellä. Lennon ostin viime viikolla, lähden ensi perjantaina, heti kun on mahdollista. Täällä on liikaa kokolattiamattoa, pölyä, sadetta ja opiskeluassosiaatioita. Hesarin Riku Korhonen kirjoitti nykyisestä elämänvaiheestani kolumnin, minä tosin joudun selviämään ilman banaanilaatikoita. Kiertolaisen elämä jatkuu vielä määrittelemättömän ajan, mutta onneksi kaksi seuraavaa pysähdystä ovat tiedossa. Vaikka täällä lähinä kitisen, on nykyisessä kämpässäni ja kaupunki(haha)asumisessa ollut jotain hyvääkin.

Joitain asioita tulee ikävä:

• Kattoikkuna ja isompi huone. Olen juuri tottunut tuplasänkyyn ja siihen, että kotitoimistoa voi pyörittää sieltä käsin. Kirjat, kone, laskin, kynä, muistiinpanot, käsirasva, villatakki, huivi, varahuivi mahtuvat kaikki hyvin sängylle ja väsymyksen iskiessä voi kellahtaa toiselle puolelle nukkumaan. Kätevää. Lisäksi halutessaan lattialla mahtuu istumaan järkevästi ilman että kaikki tavarat on tiellä.
• Kanava. Tykkään vedestä ja kampuksen ankkalampi on liian kaukana.
• Williamson Park & Ashton Memorial: ultimate lenkkimaasto ja ihana metsä.
• Kävelymatka baarista kotiin. En jaksa soittaa ja odottaa taksia tai arpoa meneekö busseja vielä, jos kyllä niin mistä ja milloin.
• Kaasuliesi, se on niin nopea ja hyvä, helppo pitää puhtaana

I have only one week left. Feels funny, then is the moment I've been looking for for a quite a while. I'm just so sick of carpets, dust, coldness and constant rain. Before that I have like million things to do, there is one exam left and I need to figure out where and how I'm going to store all my belongings. Next year I will live on campus, like I did last year. Even though I usually just complain, there have been some nice things too:

• ceiling window, I love it. Now and forever.
• canal. I like water, and on campus the duck pond will be too far. (plus side is that there is a swan couple living down there. they have baby swans too.)
• Williamson Park & Ashton Memorial: the ultimate jogging environment and a lovely forest
• being able to walk home from a bar/club. It's nice when you don't have to spend money on taxis or think about when and where to catch a bus
• gas cooker. absolutely amazing! so fast plus it's easy to clean.

Näitä ei tule ikävä / These I will not miss

Kesä yhdessä yössä / Summer overnight

Huu täällä on kesä nyt! Eilen oli ok sää ja söin jäätelöä Learning Zonen rappusilla tyytyväisenä, mutta tänään olen vielä tyytyväisempi! On ainakin +25 ja muutos on valtava. Sandaalit läpsyvät ja kesämekot hulmuavat. Osa tosin vieläkin tarpoo mennen uggeissa, mitä en voi käsittää. En alkuunkaan käsitä niiden rumuutta, se on kai diplomaattisesti katsottuna makuasia, mutta se on mielestäni fakta että +25 ja lampaankarvavuoriset saappaat on vähän liikaa.

Niin ja tota oli mulla niitä kokeitakin huomenna. Jännä nähdä miten menee, ei ole paniikkia vielä mutta se johtunee säästä ja mansikoista... Nyt ei vaan kiinnosta kirjanpito tai makrotalous.

So it is finally here. SUMMER. Yesterday was alright weather, I was happy and had ice cream on the stairs of Learning Zone, but today I'm even happier! It's at least +25 and the change is huge as it seems like summer came overnight. Yesterday people were wearing jeans, but today I have seen so many summer dresses! Although I have seen some girls still wearing uggs which I don't quite get. Of course I never get round to understanding the ugliness of those, I guess one can argue about it forever, but it is a fact that +25 and sheepskin lining is more than crazy.


Oh yes I have exams coming too. Tomorrow, two. Exiting to see how they go since at the moment I'm not panicking at all due to strawberries and weather and I'm not sure how seriously I take the revision...

Ruokaa / Food

En ole pitkään aikaan kirjoittanut lempiaiheestani joten asia täytyy korjata! Vaikka tässä on nyt vähän oltua koeperiodiruokavaliolla (mikä sana!), joka sivumennen sanoen koostuu marjapuurosta, bran flakeseista banaanilla, nuudelista tonnikalla ja hedelmistä, niin on jotain kunnollistakin joskus tehty. Pääsiäislomalla tein suklaa-appelsiinijuustokakkua ja karjalanpiirakoita siskon kanssa, ihan itse! Ensi syksyllä otan ruisjauhoja mukaan niin voin täällä leipoa myös.

Sivuhuomautus: Täällä on satanut joka päivä luoja ties kuinka kauan, mutta tietenkin kun minulla on neljä koetta tiistai-lauantai -välillä niin on aurinkoista ja ehkä lämmintä! Niin mun tuuria.

I haven't written about my favourite topic lately at all so I have to make up that one! Even though I've been on an exam diet (bran flakes, berry porridge, tuna & noodles, lots of fruits/berries) I have eaten nice stuff before. There are a couple of things that make me very happy: carelia pies and rye bread. And yes I am very Finnish. I just wonder why I haven't brought more rye bread with me earlier, it stays good for so long, is healthy and has a taste. In autumn I might have to take two packs instead of one, 1.2 kilos...


Also, a sidenote: It has been raining every single day here, but of course, it looks like it's going to be decent or even nice weather Tuesday-Saturday when I have four exams. So my luck.

Niin, sitä lomailtiin tässä kuukausi sitten rapakon toiselle laidalla ja nyt saatte sitten kuvia joita ei ole vähän aikaan näkynyt! Päiväretki Kanadaan Niagaran putouksille oli varmasti yksi matkan mieleenpainuvin asia. Ajankohtakin oli hyvä, sää oli vähän kolea kosteuden takia, mutta aurinko paistoi ja väkeä ei ollut liikaa.

If somebody remembers, I have mentioned I had a holiday across the pond. Here are some photographical proofs about one of the most memorable venues of the holiday. We took a day trip to Canada to see Niagara Falls which were absolutely amazing! The timing was also good, even though it was kind of chilly because of the mist, it was sunny and less crowded.

Morecambe

Manchesterin jälkeen käytiin Morecambessa, pienessä merenrantakaupungissa tässä lähellä. Kaupungissa (tai kylässä) ei itsessään ole juurikaan nähtävää, mutta rantapromenadi on aika kiva, kuten myös näkymä lahden yli Lake Districtin vuorille. Täytyisi ehkä ottaa selvää koska on nousuvesi, olen ollut rannalla vain laskuveden aikaan.

After Manchester went to Morecambe, a seaside town nearby. The town itself doesn't have much to see, but the promenade by Morecambe bay is quite nice. And the view over the bay to the mountains of Lake District. I have only been there when the tide is low, so it would be interesting to see how it looks like with high tide.

Lyhyesti suomeksi. Nyt ei pyyhi hyvin, on vähän koepaniikkia ilmassa viime viikonkin edestä. Koe on luennoitsijan ensimmäinen koe täällä, eli vanhat kokeet eivät auta valmistautumisen suhteen lähes ollenkaan :O apua.


Here I am, queueing for my lecturer's office hour. I have waited now for 40 minutes. Frustrating. And there is no way I could return later as the exam is tomorrow. I just DON'T understand the logic of finance, which  is quite bad thing since it's all about my logic and most of all my major :D Somebody might ask what am I doing here now, I could have come earlier you say, but the most annoying thing is that I THOUGHT I understood the concepts. It was only an illusion and now I'm screwed. I didn't do too well (read very poor) in the mid-term we had in November, so I really need some marks now. Phew. And my memory is incapable to remember all the formulae we need. Of course we are given a formula sheet, but it contains only some formulas. We should know the 'fundamental' ones. The thing I don't get though is why there is variance and covariance? They are like the most fundamental ones for stock return etc valuations so to this point in my studies even a monkey would have learnt those by heart...

Edit: So I went to him, asked some questions, all fine in that sense, but the problem now is that apparently we cover slightly different material this year as the lecturer has changed. Tomorrow's paper will be his first paper so now I'm ever more scared! There is no indication whatsoever how the exam could be like and what topics it would cover... I see problems.
